dr. kerry harman
has a background in visual arts (in the community) and in more recent years has worked as an academic at Birkbeck, University of London, leading the Master’s in Education and Social Justice program. She uses arts-based approaches in her work with communities and has a very strong commitment to collaborative processes and co-production practices. She has published in this area including ‘Feminism, Adult Education and Creative Possibility: Imaginative Responses (Bloomsbury Critical Education, 2022).
The aim of Kerry’s work is to direct attention to marginalised knowledges and enable often unheard and unseen members of communities to become visible and heard. She has co-ordinated many exhibitions throughout her working life and was Chairperson of the Newcastle Printmaker’s Workshop in the mid Eighties and an active member of the Newcastle Community Arts Centre. Kerry has recently returned to Australia after living and working in the UK for almost twenty years. An example of a recent exhibition she co-ordinated in the UK is ‘Care at Campsbourne’ (Care on the Campsbourne Estate: an interactive exhibition – Campsbourne Community Collective ). This grass roots exhibition was organised in collaboration with the Campsbourne Community Collective (Care – Campsbourne Community Collective) in 2023. Campsbourne is a large Council Estate in north London and the purpose of the exhibition was to direct attention to the often unrecognised care work that takes place in that community. Her primary connection with Randwick City at present is with Maroubra South SLSC, where her daughter is an active member of the Club and volunteers for beach patrols during summer.
